The Benefits of Baby Signs®

Benefits to children
Research shows that signing helps babies feel less frustrated, fosters language and cognitive development, boosts self-esteem and enhances social and emotional development. In addition, the Baby Signs® Program is based on American Sign Language and is also an effective early-intervention for children with special needs.

Six-week Sign, Say, and Play classes include the infants and toddlers along with their parents and caregivers.
Baby Signs® with Miss Mary will soon be offering these fun-filled weekly sessions.

Benefits to staff/early childhood professionals
Recent research has shown that using the Baby Signs® Program in infant and toddler classrooms helps caregivers be more observant and responsive to the needs of the children in their care. Signing makes classroom management easier because it helps reduce aggressive behaviors such as hitting and biting. Signs like “stop” and “gentle” help young children learn to negotiate conflicts on their own.

Baby Signs® with Miss Mary offers Early Childhood Educator classes to train childcare professionals to incorporate baby sign language into the daily routines of infants and toddlers while in childcare. Center Certification of the Baby Signs® Program and professional development hours are also available.

Benefits to parents/caregivers
Parents who sign with their babies are less frustrated because they know what their babies want, what their babies need, and how their babies feel. Signing parents feel more confident in their ability to understand and respond to their babies' needs–helping to establish strong bonds of attachment.

Workshops are offered to teach parents and caregivers how to use the Baby Signs® Program at home in daily routines. The workshops are available to interested parents or in conjunction with Center Certification. It is especially beneficial for babies to have consistency with baby sign language at home and in childcare.
